The Benefits of Bringing Powder Coating In-House

When first powder coating, it’s common for businesses to outsource their finishing operations. As bringing the process in-house can often require further staff, training and a larger upfront cost in terms of buying the machinery and equipment to ensure the process is carried out to a high standard.

Business owners often outsource powder coating for the short-term benefits. Here we will explore the benefits of bringing powder coating in-house, as well as how Junair can help you to incorporate powder coating and finishing systems into your business, so you can have long term benefits.

Lower business costs

Although the initial cost of installing the correct equipment for powder coating can be high, in the long term, it will lower the overall cost for your business. One thing to consider when outsourcing powder coating are high shipping costs, particularly if you are shipping large open components.

The process of outsourcing your coatings usually follows a specific process. First, the product is manufactured then carefully packaged and then it is loaded onto a trailer and shipped to the powder coaters. Here it is off-loaded, unpacked, and coated. Once it is coated it is often then re-packaged and sent back to the manufacturer, where it is unpacked, assembled, and then re-packaged for shipping.

On a larger scale, businesses can be sending several lorries worth of product out daily to the powder coater, and then back again, which incurs a higher long-term cost to your business. When powder coating is brought in-house, these shipping and packaging costs are removed, which decreases overheads.

Improved efficiency

When you bring the powder coating process in-house, you can control the process from beginning to end. With Junair’s guidance and expertise, figuring out what works best for your product, staff and facility is easy, allowing you to create a much more efficient process.

By bringing the coating operation in house there is a lot of time saved due to packing and shipping time

Higher quality

Many of our clients bring powder coating in-house due to the issues surrounding quality control. Once you have gone through the process of having components powder coating only to be returned damaged or badly finished it can result in a return visit for the part or batch of parts to the coater. Where they now require stripping before recoating, making the lead time even longer. Further adding to the inefficiency, packaging, and man-hour costs.

Powder coating in house means you can keep a close record of all process parameters including chemical levels, cleanliness and temperature uniformity. These can have a detrimental effect on the finish of a powder coat if not monitored correctly.

You are also able to react in time to increasing customer demands. If a customer makes a mistake and needs twenty components in a different colour by tomorrow, this can be done with very little disruption to your coating process and keep you one step ahead of the competition.

Lower carbon emissions

Companies have recently taken great steps to improve corporate social responsibility, by improving the environmental sustainability of their operations. Sending several lorries a day to the coaters, along with all of the additional packaging increases your businesses carbon footprint. This can be important to address in your business if you are looking for a more sustainable approach. With your process in-house, you can both address your business’ carbon footprint and significantly lower your costs.

Junair are certified under PAS2060 as being a carbon neutral organisation, and we can help your business to reduce your carbon footprint
