Everything you need to know about Spraybooth lighting

Painting a vehicle isn’t just all about choosing a colour to go for and then spraying this particular shade. Rather, the process is all about making sure that you’re in a spray booth that offers an exceptional level of lighting for the product that you wish to paint. So, with this in mind, we have compiled a guide that details everything you need to know about spray booth lighting in the UK. More specifically, we will take a look at the various spray booth lighting regulations that you have to abide by, and why it is so important to consider these if you want to achieve a high-quality finish for your vehicle.

Choosing a spray booth lighting installer

There are several factors that you have to consider when choosing spray booth lighting fixtures for your body shop:

Go for the natural effect

The lighting inside a spray booth should resemble natural light. Natural light is critical for you to be able to see your paint colour without the interruption of any tinting effects. So, when choosing the lighting for your spray booth, go for something that mimics the effects of natural lighting. Also, for you to see the texture of your vehicle, you will need to make sure that the lighting you go for is at the right level of brightness. Anything that is too dim or bright will make any tiny details go unnoticed. This will also make working in your bodyshop a little easier.

Make sure that the lighting is consistent

When it comes to spray booth lighting, consistency is key. By consistency, we mean that your booth’s lighting should be even throughout its entire interior. Any uneven lighting will show through shadows and small areas, and this will have the capacity to have a detrimental effect on the final finish of your vehicle. In the bodyshop environment, it could prove a little distracting or off-putting. Uniformity and consistency are key. Before you start the job, therefore, take the time to fully examine the level of lighting in your spray booth and whether it’s showing up in all areas.

Don’t forget about your light fixtures

Likewise, it’s important to give extreme consideration to the placement of your spray booth lighting fixtures. Your fixtures should be placed in areas that will provide optimal levels of light coverage to your vehicle that is being painted. Understandably, this is vital for bodyshops. Also, you’d want to make sure that you choose the right light fixture for the job. We recommend going for corner lights, as opposed to wall lights and ceiling lights. Corner lights themselves are so much easier to install and because they any be set up in any 90-degree corner, they offer high-quality all-around lighting for your vehicle.

Types of spray booth light bulbs

Good lighting starts with a good light bulb. So, when it comes to choosing the right type of light bulb for your spray booth – don’t undervalue this! Let’s have a quick run-through of the light bulbs that you can use.

LED

Spray booth LED lighting is a brilliant choice for your body shop booth. Not only are they beneficial for the environment due to their energy efficiency, but they also offer fantastic directional light emission. As well as this, an LED paint booth light has a fairly long lifespan, saving you time and money in the long run.

LED lights for spray booths can also provide a better colour rendering index (CRI), allowing for greater colour matching. Read more about the advantages of LED lighting.

Fluorescent

Fluorescent lights are the most common types of lighting found in spray booths. Like spray booth LED lighting, these lights offer a long lifespan, low heat output and high energy efficiency. However, what differs from these lights to LED ones is that they are not directional, meaning they offer 360-degree lighting. This may be ideal in some cases, but if you want to light up a specific area in your booth, an LED light source may be the better option.

Explosion-proof lighting

Explosion-proof lighting is recommended for use in laboratory applications and hazardous environments. Thus, this is why they are perfect for spray booths and the sometimes hazardous environment of bodyshops. Lights themselves can become a danger if they become too hot and interact with flammable solvents which can be commonly found in spray booths. Both LED and fluorescent proof lights are available in explosive-proof forms.

Note: To target optimal levels of lighting for your spray booth and bodyshop environment it is best to use a mixture of LED and fluorescent lights, as well as installing a variety of light fixtures.
